Photos taken July 1, 2007

Gold Camp is a highly scenic dirt road from Colorado Springs to near Victor. It is easily passable in any passenger vehicle, with gentle grades and usually gentle curves.

The road is a single lane and there are no guardrails. Some vehicles drive very fast, and the main risk on this road is coming around a blind corner to discover a vehicle proceeding toward you at high speed. So, use caution and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

These photos start at the west end of the road at Colorado route 81 and proceed eastbound toward Colorado Springs.

(4.1 mi) Lookng across a mountain valley

Cattle were loose on the road. A large hard was proceeding westbound and some mountain bikers managed to create a stampede by yodeling at the cattle. It took a while for the cattle to calm down and allow us to pass.

The most impressive rock formation on the route. This view also shows a typical design of the road, with a dirt fill across a small canyon and moderate drop-offs on either side.

Proceeding through some rock cuts.

Alpine Lake.

(6.8 mi) Tunnel. This is the only tunnel on the section of the road that is open to vehicles.

(9.9 mi) A small rock cut.

(14.5mi) A medium-size rock cut

(15.3 mi) Looking across a valley with an Alpine Lake

(16.6 mi) Traffic increases as you get closer to Colorado Springs. It appeared that many people are taking turnoffs into the forest areas.

(16.8 mi) Alpine bog

Closer to Colorado Springs, Gold Camp Road is closed to vehicles. This photo was taken near the closure point. The detour into the city is Old Stage Road, which is much more winding than Gold Camp Road.
