NOTE: this is NOT Ajo Mountain Scenic Loop at Organ Pipe Cactus National Park. Click here for those photos.

The city of Ajo scenic loop provides a good-quality, closeup view of the Sonoran desert. It is scenic, although it is below the standards of the Ajo Mountain Loop in Organ Pipe Cactus National Park. The west part of the city of Ajo loop is better than the east part. The best desert landscapes are on the side roads which run to the south and west of the main road. These side roads are typically one-lane dirt roads, a little rough but easily passable by a passenger vehicle.

This is a typical view along one of the side roads off the main road.

The area is thick with saguaro, organ pipe cactus, and other desert vegetation.

As you reach the end of the dirt road, there is some abandoned equipment which formerly supported ranching.

There is an abandoned utility truck and a windmill truss.

The vehicle is an old Chevrolet pickup.

Roads to the south of the Ajo city loop were closed for wildlife protection.
